Apples, Pickles, and Egg Creams

Visiting New York in December last year, I think one of the things I found most thrilling was being exposed to such a delectable plethora of foodstuffs!

Perhaps my favourite day during my whole trip was when a very lovely Jewish man named Sai (of bigapplegreeter.org, a marvelous, free service offered by NY residents) took us all around Lower Manhattan and the Lower East Side.

He told us all about the Jewish history of New York, and in particular, took us to many very well-known eateries, including Katz’s Delicatessen (Matzo Ball Soup and an Egg Creme), Guss’ Pickles (one cold Kosher Dill Pickle straight out of the vat), and Yonah Schimmel’s Knishery (Potato Knish and Berry Knish).

Whilst much of the Jewish culture has now relocated to the outer boroughs, it’s lovely to see that some of these incredible places still live on in the heart of the Big Apple.
