Kitchen Garden Update – The seed babies

The garden is growing!!!!  I shouldn’t be so surprised. Gardens are meant to grow. When you put seeds in the ground they are meant to germinate. And most of the time in the past when we’ve tended to a garden it’s all worked out fine and everything has grown and done what it’s supposed to. And I’m still surprised…every time.

Maybe it’s because the seeds are all so tiny. When you pour them into your hand from the packet your body hardly even registers they’ve landed in your palm, they are that small. I shouldn’t just dismiss them so quickly because of that.

From little things big things grow.

Maybe seeds are a bit like babies. Babies are born every single minute of every day, really isn’t that a bit passe? Yet they continue to astound us. It freaks us all out how amazingly small and fragile their tiny bodies are. Yet, with love and attentiveness they grow and flourish and wriggle and grow a bit more into these incredible, intelligent human beings.

Maybe that’s why I’m so astounded every time I see my little seeds germinate.

So here are our little seed-babies. The top-left is our lettuces, down there are the cute little radishes – those babies are easy to grow!, Top-right is the spinach – growing strong and tall, and there are the cobbler’s peg – the black sheep of the family. Hm-mm…  yes, well I’ll talk about those with you a bit later.

Also – the possums (we think) have found our purple carrots and coriander. Darren went into defense mode and immediately fashioned some very impressive-looking guards for them out of stuff he found in our garage. I’m certain the cute possums won’t be able to get through those fortifications but it’s like an open invitation to eat everything else in the garden! We’re only really worried about the carrots – the seedlings cost quite a bit so we want to protect them!

I wonder what we’ll wake up to in the morning…

And here’s a sneak peak at our next project!! The old chook pen is going to get a bit of a renovation before we get some new chooks next week! I can’t wait!

arghhh! possums- the bain of my garden’s existence. I believe poss off (hilarious name) and hooking up a sensor light near the vegies will both help scare away possums too.

the sensor light is a great idea! scare the pants off them. i heart “poss off” also!

Isn’t is super exciting though? When I started my garden, I was going out everyday to check it. Then my babies started shooting through! I felt like I had pets or children or both! Is that a lite weird? I felt a great sense of acheivement when full blown plants were in front of my eyes (they just grow so quickly! Lucky they are rooted to the ground or I would be quite upset at them wanting to leave home). I actually went on Ebay and bought heaps of seeds. Really random stuff too – things I would probably never cook with like borage ( which flourished and died not log after). Apparently borage is really nice in salads if you can suck it up and eat the prickly bits according to my (and apparently Jamie Oliver’s) herb guru Jekka. If you don’t have one of her books you need to pick one up – so much stuff to learn about herbs it’s insane!

She has a brilliant recipe for lavender cookies – yes, lavender! Sounds odd i know, but they are amazingly good. I’ve cooked them a few times and tried making different desserts with them. but lavender is my obsession when it comes to herbs. I’ve tried making lavender and blueberry jam, lavender sugar, lavender martini (for someone else though! I hate martinis). This list if things you can do with lavender is huge! I’ve also done lemon balm cookies and they were delish! Not to mention adding rosemary to my White Christmas last year.

Anywho, I think I’ll finish up there with the herb talk or I’ll be going all night!
